But Stihl has produced dozens of trimmers. How do I know that I am following the correct start-up operation for my current model?

Yes, it is true that there are different Stihl weed eaters available, but all their starting methods are, more or less, similar. Of course, it is still best to refer to the specific instructions of your unit.

How To Start A Stihl Weed Eater (6 Steps)

Here’s a guide on how do you start a Stihl weed eater:

1. Inspect The Fuel Tank.

This is the first thing that you need to do. Inspecting the fuel tank means making sure you have enough fuel in the tank for the starting operation.

What happens if the fuel level is low?

This could lead to disruptions while starting the machine or hamper the starting process altogether.

This step is necessary for the gas Stihl weed eater models but not a problem for the electric models. If you are eager to know how to start a Stihl weed eater FSE 60, then you can worry no more. This model is an electric Stihl weed eater and you can just skip this step.

What’s the ideal gas to oil fuel mixture? Most Stihl gas-powered models make use of 50-to-1 gas-oil fuel ratio.

2. Clear The Area Within A 10-Meter Radius.

For safety purposes, it is necessary to follow this next step. Make sure that the area surrounding you is clear and there are no things that can easily catch fire.

Why do you need to do this? This is because the weed eater’s head will spin immediately once you start the machine. If, for instance, the trimmer line makes contact with a foreign object while spinning, this can cause an accident.

Also, make sure there is no other person within a close radius of 10-meters before you even start the weed eater machine.

3. Switch To “On” Position.

Press down and hold the throttle trigger interlock. In other models, this one is called the lockout lever.

Refer to the image below for guidance:

The throttle trigger interlock is also known as lockdown lever, which main function is for safety purposes

Squeeze the throttle trigger and switch the starter to “ON” position while still engaging both levers.

In gas-powered models, the “ON” position is indicated with a capital “I” while some models use the easier-to-read “Start” word. Also, other models require to turn over the engine first so that you can move the switch to the start position.

Once you’ve successfully done this, release the pressure from both levers slowly.

4. Move To Choke Position.

Next is the choke setting of the machine. Move the choke position to “FULL” if the engine is cold and move it to “Half-Choke” if the engine is warm.

After which, depress the fuel bulb. Continue doing this until the bulb is filled with fuel.

5. Put The Trimmer On A Flat Surface.

Now, lay the weed eater to the ground. This is an important step on how to start a Stihl weed eater.

Make sure the trimmer is laying on the ground and the opposite side of the starter grip handle is the one in contact with the surface. Also make sure the trimmer line is not touching any object or the ground.

6. Pull The Starter Trigger Slowly Until There Is Resistance.

Finally, slowly pull the starter grip handle. You should feel resistance and then proceed to give a sharp tug after.

Now, the rope should be guided back to the rope storage to prevent it from tangling. Give another four more strong and fast pulls before you move the choke lever to the middle setting. Continue doing so until the machine’s engine successfully starts.

Lastly, move the throttle trigger to its idle setting after starting the engine.
